06.03.2010 Angela and Marcus come visit

Angela and Marcus came up from Oxford last weekend so we decided to show them some of our favourite spots. Of which of course North Berwick is one of the best, not in the least because of the fish and chips shop we can never resist!

However, we had not climbed North Berwick Law yet and decided this would be a good occasion. This 187m high volcanic plug is a real landmark and can be readily seen from as far as the Pentland Hills. So after filling out bellies with fish and chips we set off and were treated to marvelous views once we reached the top.

The Law's trademark is a an arch constructed of two whale jaw bones, which unfortunately has been replaced a few years back by a rather fake looking plastic version. Nevertheless, it's an eyecatcher and frames the great views nicely!

The next day we decided to go up to Perthshire as Marcus wanted to hike in the snow. Even though there was snow to find much closer (even in the Pentlands there was still plenty that weekend) we wanted to see something new, and boy we were surprised when we ended up in a full-blown ski centre!

It was busy too, it looked like half of Scotland was out skiing that day! Just north of the centre it got much quieter though and nice for a short hike, which was a bit hampered by the deep snow! So here's the final shot of our winter: (hopefully!)

Just a few miles more north is Balmoral Castle, the Scottish residence of the Royal Family, but that's for later in the year. Waiting for spring to come!
