24.10.2009 Lake District

We went to the Lake District this weekend to celebrate Iwona's birthday! Stayed in a lovely B&B in Bowness-on-the-Lake/Windermere. The weather was a bit rough unfortunately, especially on the way up, but we did get treated to a good hour of sunshine just after we arrived :)
We were very impressed with the Lake District, we didn't expect it to be as mountainous as it was. The Lake Windermere area is more gentle, but beautiful especially this time of year with all the fall colours.

We ran into this road sign on our walk along the lake which made us wonder how many blind people we would find at the viewpoint!?

On Sunday we were a bit queasy from a massive pizza and a bottle of champaign the night before, and the weather wasn't in our favour either. Nevertheless we decided to try for a walk near Coniston in the Tilberthwaite Fells, but our brelly didn't survive the gusty winds for long, and then Iwona slipped in typical fashion of a rock on her bum. So we decided to do a bit of car sightseeing instead.
We did a round trip through Little and Great Langdale Valleys which was absolutely spectacular and not always for the faint of heart! We met lots of sheep of a particularly cute variety along and on the road. The place is also a hikers' nirvana and we'll definitively come back when it is a bit drier. At the moment of writing (late November) the Lake District has been battered by storms and floods though, and our thoughts are with the many people who had to leave their homes.
